IDP Identification campaign

Its been 4 solid years, since the crisis broke in the English speaking part of Cameroon.

Thousands have died, villages have been scorched to earth, tens of thousands displaced to neighbouring Nigeria and hundreds of thousands have been internally displaced from their homes into neighbouring regions (According to Amnesty International).

With the crisis blowing into an arm conflict in late 2017 which has left over 700,000 people displaced, the crisis topped the Norwegian Refugee Council’s annual list of the world’s most neglected displacement crises.

While a few privileged Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) find shelter and food from family and friends in their area of hosting, many have not and are now like refugees in their own country.

SGIF through SGIF4idps project is reaching out to some 230 of these people who live in the most dilapidated conditions in Douala, Limbe and Buea. To do this, we most first identify these IDPs one on one by going to the field.

This is mostly because there is hardly any database from which one can actually consult to reachout to these people. Moreover, in a society were a greater majority of its local population seems to be living in poverty, everyone wants to take advantage of the situation and come out each time these people are called out for related distribution. Others who claim to stand as middle men between those willing to give and those in need are often very dishonest. As such, much of the intended aid never reaches its target.

Identification team lead by Mme F Kim, CEO of Heal the World Movement

For our assistance to reach the intended target, SGIF needed to go to the field and hand pick these people. It was going to be a journey into no mans land but meeting with Mme F Kim from Heal the world Movement facilitated the task. Already familiar with the terrain, she open heartedly gave us the boost we needed

We set a quest to find and identify at least 100 households across our target zone within a year. With only 4 months of working, we have been able to identify over 70-80 households. Each consisting of an average of 5 members. It is however sad to say that 80% are either women or children. This leaves them extremely vulnerable as they move from rural area into large metropolitan cities.

Some Identified IDPs

Meeting some of these people have been the most formidable experience for the entire SGIF team. Giving them a listening ear have us a one on one access to some of the most heart break stories #IDPdiaries. However, telling them to the world and bringing precise help in time of need has been our greatest relief.

Through this, we could better appraise their immediate and long term needs, gain acceptance within these IDP communities and build possible solutions to cover those needs, have the chance to assess their immediate and long term needs, especially the vulnerable women and chidden.

Malnourished and living in deplorable condition.

#SGIF4idps and #IDPdiaries are both children born out of this Identification process.
